Scientific Independence Under Political Authority

How should the boundary between governmental authority and independent scientific interpretation be drawn?

The boundary between governmental authority and independent scientific interpretation has
become a pressing institutional question. Shifts in the composition of scientific advisory panels,
revisions to official positions on established research questions, and disruptions to federal
funding for ongoing research programs have prompted debate within the scientific community
about the structural conditions that shape scientific integrity across political cycles.

This SciPoll asks the SciPinion expert community to evaluate these structural questions directly:
the appropriate role of government in interpreting and communicating science, the factors most
likely to drive shifts in official scientific positions, and the institutional mechanisms that bear on
scientific independence. All responses are anonymous. Results may be published in aggregate
form.
