I have no confidence in the decision making of this administration. The active disdain for facts and expertise will lead to a loss of talent and money across the board.

I wouldn’t say there’s a complete loss of confidence, but there are enough signals to raise concern. The combination of fewer new grants, delays in fund disbursement, and shifting priorities suggests that agencies may face increasing constraints in maintaining their traditional balance between basic and applied research. What stands out is not just the funding levels themselves, but the uncertainty and variability—for example, delays in releasing already approved funds or changes in review priorities. That kind of unpredictability makes it harder for researchers and institutions to plan long-term projects, which are often essential for meaningful scientific progress. At the same time, these agencies still have strong structures, experienced leadership, and a long track record of supporting high-quality research. So I wouldn’t go as far as saying “very concerned.” It’s more that the system feels under pressure, and if the current trends continue, there could be gradual erosion in their ability to support investigator-driven science consistently.

It depends upon the political ideology of the government in turn.

Science funding has always moved slowly, and that's been understood and accepted. But the current gaps in funding, reductions in funding, and outright denial of promised funds means early career investigators are going to be the most impacted. The very same cutting edge ideas and new methodologies that are a crucial part of core research missions are more likely to be areas of expertise for young investigators. As such, science in the US is going to struggle, for longer than the next 3 years.

Expect it will 5-7 years to get back on track during which time particularly younger investigators will be most affected and “ lost” to industry.

We cannot continue to reduce funding to education and research and continue to be the leading producer of top scientific research/discoveries.

The current funding challenges are making research science a much less desirable field to pursue, and cutting support for trainees, deeply cutting into the pipeline of scientists in the next generation.

In three years, our government will change after general ellections. That may have significant impacts on the maintenance of said missions.

Although my research does not rely on government funding, I have observed increasing uncertainty in federal science budgets and shifting political priorities. This leads me to feel somewhat concerned about whether government science agencies will be able to maintain their core research missions consistently over the next three years, particularly in terms of long-term basic science support and agency stability.

If the current trend goes on, it will lead to major gaps in research as researchers will focus on trying to get funding rather than addressing issues within their communities.
