I have been a laboratory worker, but I have not managed such a case of laboratory exposure.
  • Yes, but I do not know how it was handled

The incidence took place in a research and teaching laboratory and I undertook the cleanup but don't know how it was handled by the head and higher authority. In my own case, there was zero risk to people outside the laboratory.

I have worked extensively in laboratory settings, but I have not personally witnessed or been involved in a hazardous laboratory exposure incident.

In India, BSL2/3 infrastructures are mostly absent in the laboratories of premier institutes. During PhD, I have witnessed students using same incubator for culturing pathogenic and non-pathogenic bacteria due to lack of infrastructure. I have witnessed negligible good lab practices which includes cleaning of working area post-working, using same homogenizer for deadly cervical cancer samples and other samples and even the authorities NOT providing even gloves to the students/workers collecting HIV-TB patient blood. Students are NOT allowed to speak up. Mentors/supervisors cover up in fear of punishment. Authorities do NOT care how these cases are handled until and unless they are exposed somehow.

I know a few chemical incident exposures happened in the lab, but I'm not really sure how they were handled. I only heard about following stricter safety procedures after the incident.

My research primarily focuses on computational modeling, deep learning, bioinformatics, and embedded hardware systems rather than the direct wet-lab handling of Biosafety Level 3/4 biological pathogens.
  • Yes, and it was reported through formal channels

I only witnessed such incidents indirectly but the entire response and formal reporting process were handled in a textbook manner.

I have witnessed a co worker getting scalds when he opened an autoclave before allowing it to cool off. But this incident does not involve a biological hazardous agent

Throughout our working experience in academic laboratories in Yemen, our work has been focused on standard testing procedures. Although resources in our laboratory are limited, following standard routine safety measures and materials have helped avoid major hazardous exposure incidents during my shifts.

It involved potential exposure to Neisseria meningitidis which was an incidental finding after specimen manupulation. Appropriate notification was done and staff were give prophylaxis. Through a root cause analysis, the lab installed a biohazard cabinet for handling specimens.
