1. Artificial intelligence and machine learning: AI and machine learning are already having a transformative impact on various fields, including healthcare, finance, manufacturing, and transportation. In the next 5 years, we can expect further advancements in AI applications and technologies, such as natural language processing, computer vision, and robotics. These developments will create new opportunities for automation, personalization, and optimization, but they will also raise ethical and social concerns about data privacy, bias, and job displacement.
2. Food sustainability: With the global population projected to reach 9.7 billion by 2050, the demand for food is expected to increase by 70%. At the same time, climate change, land degradation, and water scarcity are threatening the productivity and resilience of agricultural systems. Therefore, there is a pressing need to develop sustainable and resilient food systems that can provide nutritious, affordable, and accessible food for all while minimizing environmental impact. This requires research on various fronts, such as crop breeding, precision agriculture, alternative protein sources, and circular economy.
2. Renewable energy & storage: The transition to a low-carbon economy is essential for mitigating climate change and achieving sustainable development goals. Renewable energy sources such as solar, wind, and hydropower have been growing rapidly in recent years, but their intermittent and variable nature poses challenges for grid stability and energy security. Therefore, there is a need to improve the efficiency, reliability, and scalability of renewable energy technologies, as well as to develop new energy storage solutions that can store surplus energy during times of excess supply and release it during times of high demand.

Exposure Assessment for Human Health Risk Assessment. Historically, exposure has been monitored on a case-by-case basis. Exposure modeling would be much more efficient and cost-effect but it lacks the database needed to feed these models. This research should be done as a public works project because all would benefit; however, no entity has taken on this task even though exposure is fully half of risk (with toxic effect per exposure being the other half) in any risk assessment. This would not cost hundreds of millions of USD but it could consume tens of millions of USD over 10 years and would provide exposure estimates with much more confidence and much less need to over-estimate.

The rise in the global burden of non-communicable diseases in the western countries despite the advancement in medicine points to the limitations of current approaches used in classifying individual risk of disease. Current disease risk classification schemes are based on clinical risk factors. However, we now know that two individuals with the same underlying risk factors do not always have the same risk of a disease, say heart disease. Since the advent and completion of the Human Genome Project, researchers have studied the use of genetic variations or polymorphisms to determine how probable an individual is to have a disease. This has led to thousands of variants being identified from Genome-wide Association Studies, thanks also to improvement in next-generation sequencing technology. Consequently, there is a surging interest in using genetic associations to determine disease likelihood and patient outcomes. In the next 5-10 years, we will see the incorporation of these genetic risk tools in the clinic for routine management of patients. Drug development will be more individualised, so as to minimise waste and increase precision and effectiveness. The impact of genetic variants on anti-cancer drug interventions will be another area of major research interests

Artificial intelligence looks like the buzz now. Interest will increase on it, 2. there will be an increase in the use of generics and personalized medicines in order to advance healthcare delivery. 3. there is a big concern about the effects of climate change and as such it would still dominate the research land scape in the next 5 years.

Artificial intelligence and personalized medicine are two of the most exciting topics in the next 5 years because they have the potential to revolutionize healthcare. AI can analyze vast amounts of data and identify patterns that are difficult for humans to see, which can lead to more accurate diagnoses and better treatment plans. Personalized medicine, on the other hand, takes into account an individual's genetic makeup, lifestyle, and other factors to create a treatment plan that is tailored to their specific needs. Together, these two technologies have the potential to improve patient outcomes and reduce healthcare costs. As research and development continue in these areas, we can expect to see even more exciting breakthroughs in the years to come.

I have the most knowledge of gene therapy so I believe that this field is growing rapidly and that in the next five years we will see an expansion of treatments for genetic diseases and disorders that can be cured/treated with gene correction or replacement technologies. I selected the other two because it seems to be the general trend that of society, the demand for more automation and for greater usage of renewable energy as states and countries continue to try to phase out internal combustion engines
