Food safety remains an ongoing concern in the United States despite strong regulatory frameworks from agencies like the FDA and USDA. Challenges include outbreaks of foodborne illnesses caused by pathogens such as Salmonella, E. coli, and Listeria, as well as risks linked to complex supply chains and imported products. Frequent recalls of meat, produce, and packaged goods highlight vulnerabilities in production and distribution. Additionally, emerging issues like antibiotic resistance and improper handling practices in restaurants and homes underscore the need for continuous monitoring and public awareness to ensure safe food consumption.

CDC estimates that about 9.9 million domestically acquired foodborne illnesses, 53,300 hospitalizations, and roughly 931 deaths occur annually in the United States from just seven major pathogens, which reflects a substantial, ongoing food safety burden. Many people cite frequent recalls and perceived regulatory gaps as reasons for concern, indicating that both objective disease burden and public perception point to a real food safety problem.

Many of the street foods are prepared, showcased and sold to customers in open. Bare hands touch and serving make food contaminated, and water based beverages like fresh juice and lemonade have every chance of contamination with waterborne pathogens causing gastroenteritis, typhoid, diarrhea and hepatitis.

Food safety is an important public health problem in India because many reasons affect how safe our food safe. In many areas, food gets contaminated during farming, transport, storage, or cooking because of lack of awareness. Adulteration is also major concern, where items like milk, spices, oils, and grains are mixed with harmful substances to increase business profit. Street food is loved by every   person in country, but most of all vendors are failed to maintain appropriate clean surroundings, use safe water, or store ingredients properly, which increases the risk of food borne disease. In rural and urban areas, food is often kept in the open, exposed to dust, flies, and heat, which causes  spoil it quickly. Excessive use of pesticides on fruits and vegetables is another concern , especially when produce is not washed well before eating. Although India has strong laws and the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) works to regulate quality, enforcement is not much effective because of limited resources and large population size. As awareness grows, more people are demanding safe, clean, and properly labeled food, but consistent improvement still requires better monitoring, education, and responsible practices from producers, vendors, and consumers.

Health Department seems to do weekly inspections and report these findings via news outlets. From what I read they seem to be very thorough.

we are still having clean water challenges, which translates to ineffective monitoring. if we still experience  some meat products being recalled.
