What are the benefits of strong collaborations between academia and the industry?

It is said that lack of relevant relationships between the industry and academia impede industrial innovations, as a strong bond between both can revolutionise global economy. What is your take on this and what benefits can such relationship between both parties bring?

In my opinion, the academia and the industry should be fully integrated based on their field of expertise. The academic community is very crucial for innovation and accustoming of new technology for the industrial development. In the same way, the industry is vital for application practice of the theoretical knowledge.

Universities should cooperate with industry field to send their graduate to them. Also, academic institutions should seek the industry needs to establish new faculties and departments.

There are several benefits eg: Access to research funds, industry funding applications are much easier to complete compared to academic grants, students get exposed to solve real world challenges, expand their network and potential job opportunities, PI get funds to conduct interesting research. The catch is navigating IP issues and ability to publish freely. The big picture is it is a win-win!

In my view, strong partnerships between academia and industry are game-changers for sparking innovation and fueling economic growth. Academia brings fresh ideas, while industry turns those ideas into practical solutions that really make a difference. These collaborations also keep academic programs in tune with what’s needed in the real world, giving students a leg up with hands-on experience. Plus, they help create new jobs and industries, giving the economy a boost. Overall, it’s a win-win for tackling big issues like healthcare and sustainability

Strong ties between academia and industry (usually financial) offer to collapse the two into a single entity. This is not wholly desirable, because their objectives are not always compatible. Regulators tasked with protecting public health and safety need to be able to rely on academics to analyze and critique hazardous practices and products.

I think strong collaborations between academia and industry bring numerous benefits, accelerating innovation by merging academic research with industrial expertise. This partnership will enables academia to address real-world problems, resulting in practical solutions and advancements. Then, the exchange of knowledge allows researchers to understand industry needs while providing industry with access to cutting-edge academic insights. Overall, these collaborations drive economic growth by translating research into marketable products and services, revolutionizing the global economy.

So, at Clarke International University in Uganda, we use the concept of Professors of Practice; these are teaching faculty that have over 30 years' experience but may not necessarily have PhDs. So, they work in the Humanitarian Sector and are responding to health needs in emergence situations with refugees and or displaced persons for example. While teaching or mentoring students expose students to real life situation on for example how to conduct a rapid health needs assessments among displaced population. Students/learners have hands on experience in providing critical healthcare services to the displaced in the refugee settlements.

There is no right or wrong here. My experience is the following: The scientific question may be best formulated by the industry. The industry has the subject topic knowledge and the specifics around their product. The scientific experience and overall knowledge about what methods to be applied, execution of the relevant analyses to be conducted to answer the scientific question, and how to interpret results independently may be best done by academia with support from industry.

Crucial, for developing research questions and projects that are relevant; for innovation (in my experience, researchers in industry are more knowledgable and interested in novel techniques, novel approaches); and, of course, for application of findings from research projects.

A strong collaboration between and academia and industry is very critical because it will help academia to find real solutions to the most pressing issues facing the industry. By doing so, the results of the research would be relevant to the community around the place where the research institution is located. Without a strong collaboration between academia and industry, the research would not be miningful because the results would not be solving any problem in the society.

One advantage of robust ties between industry and academics is the acceleration of innovation and technological improvement. Through these collaborations, theoretical understanding and scholarly research are brought together with real-world, practical applications in the business sector, hastening the creation of new products, technologies, and solutions that can enhance economic success and societal advancement.

In my opinion, the relationship between industry and academia should be inevitably consolidated.

As a neurosurgeon, I can say the following: for example, let’s consider the textile industry. I also have an article on this topic (Cervical sagittal curvatures of workers in the textile industry). Workers in the textile industry bend their necks forward for 8-10 hours a day. These workers experience severe neck, shoulder, and arm pain. This situation has been mentioned in many articles. According to scientific articles, proper movement of the cervical spine in suitable positions for appropriate durations will reduce pain. In other words, if the working environments of employees can be arranged healthily according to scientific articles, it will positively affect the health of textile workers, especially their neck health. Collaboration between two different fields will not only positively impact human health but also increase productivity in the industrial sector. Back and neck pain leads to significant loss of workforce and economic loss.

I would like to give a second example. In the city of Karabük in Turkey, part of the population earns their living through forestry activities. However, there are one or two deaths each year due to forestry accidents. There are also injuries. Academic studies in both health and engineering fields can reduce work accidents. As a result, this will significantly improve the health of those working in forestry activities and increase productivity.

In both examples, if academia and industry work together in cooperation, it will have positive effects on human health and increase productivity in the workplace.

With deep respect, Dr. Abdullah Emre Taçyıldız.
