In my opinion and professonal experience , both research publications and academic level in the subjects taught by the University professors are important  to maintain or enhance the unversity standards and stature.

By classifying, do you mean the positions of faculty or "quality/ranking" of professors?

1) In most U.S. research universities, research is the primary focus for tenured and tenure-track professors (full, associate, and assistant), followed by teaching and service. At my institution, the workload consists of 45% research, 35% teaching, and 20% service.

2) For clinical professors (non-tenure-track), their primary responsibilities include teaching (classes or practices) and some departmental service roles. Research is not their formal duty, but is likely encouraged.

3) Research professors (mostly non-tenure-track, but research professors at my alma mater can be tenured) focus on research, without teaching duties and with limited departmental service roles, as the name suggests.

4) Lecturers are non-tenure-track faculty members who focus solely on teaching. Unlike clinical professors, lecturers generally don't have voting rights.

5) Adjunct professors are short-term or part-time teaching faculty with much shorter contracts than other non-tenure-track faculty. As part-time faculty, adjunct professors may not enjoy the same full employee benefits.

6). Visiting assistant professors are short-term scholars who are not formal members of the university and who hold either teaching or collaborative research positions.

7) Post-docs are short-term scholars in training with only research duties, but may occasionally teach.

The answer to this question is also institution-dependent and depends on the perspective from which it is viewed.
In Liberal Arts and teaching-oriented state colleges, teaching is often the primary focus, regardless of the position.

In my opinion its application to real life. For example solving simultaneous equations with many (or even two) variables is not understood at academic level. Its tought in a mechanical way to solve using matrix or other approaches. For example to solve linear PDEs into linear algraic equations and their solution using matrix procedure is applied in civil engineering. Say solving Groundwater levels after a given rainfall recharge for initial and boundary conditions. Mathmatic/ numerical experts do not know to give real life examples for students to understand how simultaneous euations solution is used in real life.
