  My own institution does not recognise expertise and fails to ensure its viability as a significant research institution.  Other public funders are under pressure, simply because there is insufficient financial support for them. Charitable groups are under pressure because, for the most part, they too do not have sufficient public support. Overall, it is my view that the public think that research is well funded and the renumeration for working as a researcher is more than adequate - how wrong this view is.

  My first instinct would still be to look for another public funder. If that went nowhere, I’d have no problem approaching industry, especially if the work was relevant to them. I’d try foundations and my own institution as well, but I suspect those would be more limited options. Crowdfunding would be a last resort for me. I just wouldn’t want to rely on it to keep a serious line of research going.
