If you have turned to a funding source you had not used before, or decided not to, what was the deciding factor?

I couldn't find a source of funding at all. 

The primary deciding factors are alignment with the research objectives, potential scientific impact, sustainability, collaboration opportunities, and the ability to maintain research integrity and academic independence.

I would choose a new funding source to expand the dissemination of research, ideas, and new applications, provided that it complies with the laws and regulations of my country

It was the interest of the new founder who was willing to accept the existing protocol for the study.

The main factor was scientific independence. I would avoid a source if it could influence the research question or how results are reported.

We were contacted by another funding source. It was more their decision than ours.

The complexity of the grant - some grants require information that is superfluous and contributes nothing to the scientific question being asked.

The freedom of researching. 

It is two ways. Either I decided to turn to a new funder for new experiences and possibilities, or I did so because of challenges with the funding source I was used to.

For me, it was mostly about the strings attached. I didn’t really care whether the money was public or private as long as we could do the study properly and publish what we found. If a funder wanted too much say over the question or the results, I would rather look elsewhere.

The deciding factor would be whether the source allows scientific independence and avoids conflicts with my primary employment. Transparency, autonomy, and alignment with the original research question matter more than the size of the award.

Tired of expending time and energy writing proposals with falling hit rate.

My funding source was changed and the deciding factor was due to shortage fund from donor to World Vision Ethiopia. Now I shifted tasks and organization into local NGO with limited budget.

In the past years -i have looked and used a diversity of funding sources. I'd rather have funding from a different source, than no funding at all.
