SciPinion conducted an independent review of a publication proposing that water-soluble film composed of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA or PVOH) used in unit-dose laundry products (laundry pods or capsules) is not completely degraded in wastewater treatment plants. SciPinion recruited eight experts specializing in plastic biodegradation and wastewater treatment processes from a broad population of researchers. The expert panel identified substantial methodological flaws in the original publication. Their analysis indicated that real-world PVA degradation rates would significantly exceed those predicted by the paper’s model. The panel reached clear consensus that PVA should be classified as readily biodegradable.
