However, there has been a lot of progress whereby scanning digital media, especially social media, may provide us with information about an infectious outbreak before more traditional surveillance approaches, such as hospital visits. For respiratory viruses, should folks wear masks in public a) always, b) if they are or may be infected, or c) if they are afraid of getting infected? Are masks a) protection, or b) social signals?
Since 2020, the public has thought of masks as having a protective purpose, and many rebel at the inconvenience, rationalizing that “they do a poor job of protecting.” Is the current epidemic a good opportunity for government and medicine to teach the folks about the more important virtues of using masks to convey information?
