It need to form some committees which is involve in the field to discuss and tighten the monitoring on the relation between researchers in the same field.

In my opinion it is unfixable until the public is confronted with flawed political and regulatory actions based on junk science, where they understand how they have been hoodwinked and, as a result, are losing important lifestyle elements either through restrictions or high cost.   Then, and maybe only then, will the public stand up and put a halt to the nonsense.  Possibly, through honest and understandable educational attempts, maybe (a big maybe) can legitimate science be presented in a way to teach the public the distinction between scientifically sound versus poor political and regulatory decision making.  This is a huge uphill battle since it involves lawyers and politicians (lawyers), aided by the media and academics, who are incapable of understanding fact from fiction, uncertainties, or who are driven by ulterior motives in making poor political and regulatory decisions.

Professional organizations, academia, and research centers must adopt standard practices to provide immediate rebuttal to media misinformation in science.  Credible voices with easy-to-understand messages is needed.
  • user-842209

Addressing this erosion requires a multifaceted approach, involving improved science communication, greater transparency, and efforts to depoliticize scientific issues. Ultimately, rebuilding and maintaining public trust in science is essential for addressing the global challenges that lie ahead.

Prominent people and politicians need to be more honest. Media needs to be more discerning. I think that is happening in Europe, but not in the US
  • user-887652

THE PUBLIC is not one thing. SCIENCE is not one thing. Public education is failing. Under the US system where K-12 education is under local control and communications are dispersed, the chances of success are minimal. Even a national "moonshot" effort cannot be used to get public attention anymore. One might hope that climate change will eventually get people's attention, but probably less as a science education project than a practical disaster survival exercise.

We need to do a far better job of educating the public as to how science is conducted, and the value of peer-review.  We also need to have scientists more aggressively debunk some of the misinformation parading as science on social media.

Enhance Transparency: Clearly communicate how scientific research is conducted, including the methodologies, potential conflicts of interest, and limitations. Transparency helps demystify the process and shows that science is self-correcting.

Improve Science Communication: Simplify complex scientific concepts and make them more accessible to the general public. Using clear, relatable language and avoiding jargon can help bridge the gap between scientists and the public.

Engage with the Community: Foster direct interaction between scientists, healthcare professionals, and the public through forums, social media, and public talks. Building personal connections can make science more relatable and trustworthy.

Address Misinformation: Actively counter misinformation by providing accurate, evidence-based information through credible sources. Engaging with media and social platforms to correct false narratives can help restore trust.

Promote Consistency Among Experts: Strive for consensus among scientists and healthcare providers when communicating guidelines and recommendations. Unified messaging reduces confusion and builds confidence in scientific advice.

Involve the Public in Research: Encourage public participation in research through citizen science projects and patient-centered studies. When people are directly involved in scientific processes, they are more likely to trust the outcomes.

Highlight Success Stories: Share examples of how scientific research has positively impacted health and society. Real-life success stories can illustrate the value of science and reinforce public confidence.

I'm not very optimistic about this. Perhaps it would help to redirect scientific achievements to the solution of real problems of present societies, to regulate their use in the war industry, to predict and mitigate the unwanted consequences of some of its applications...

To build trust with the public, it is essential to promote transparency and clear communication in science. Scientists and experts should engage more actively with the public, making complex topics accessible and understandable. Combating misinformation through education and public outreach is crucial, as well as encouraging critical thinking and media literacy. Collaboration with trustworthy media outlets and involving the public in scientific discussions can also help bridge the gap, showing that science is not only reliable but also open to scrutiny and continuous improvement.

    1.  More interfaces with the public by scientists, including speaking in lay language at schools and various organizations
    2.  Educating the media to provide the public with accurate information and hopefully minimize media bias
    3.  Educating school children at elementary school levels and higher grades in basic scientific concepts
